KUMBAKONAM Another important site to be included in your excursion itinerary, this is located at about 36 kilometres from Tanjore. Kumbakonam is famous for its temples, namely the Saragapani, Kumbeswarar, Nagaswara and the Ramaswamy. The place is also famous for its Mahamaham festival celebrated once every twelve years.

SWAMIMALAI At a distance of 32 kilometres from the main city of Tanjore, Swamimalai is also an important religious site. It is famous for Arupadaivaadu, one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan (Lord Shiva’s son). The wonderful brass work in Swamimalai is also renowned.

THIRUKANDIYUR This is at a distance of about 10 kilometres from the main Tanjore and is yet another important religious destination. Thirukandiyur is famous for the Brahma Sri Kandeswarar and Harsha Vimochana Temples. A visit to thes temples gives one an idea of ancient Dravidian architecture.

THIRUVAIYARU Around 13 km from Tanjore, this is another important place to be included in ones itinerary. Thiruvaiyaru is famous for Thyagaraja's annual celebrations who, along with Muthuswami Dikshitar and Shyama Sastri were the maestro of Carnatic music. Situated along the banks of the river Cauvery, this place is also has an old Shiva temple dedicated to Lord Panchanatheeswar.

THIRUVARUR It is one of the important pilgrimage sites in Tamil Nadu. Located around 55 kilometres from Tanjore, it attracts a number of tourists to its Thiyagarajaswami Temple, the biggest chariot temple in Tamil Nadu. This is also known for being the birth place of Saint Thiyagaraja, one of the musical trinity of South India.

TRINALLUR Located at a distance of 95 km from Tanjore this town is famous for its Shivastalam, which is a Maadakkovil built at an elevation. According to legend, Agasthyar was blessed with the vision of Shiva’s marriage here.
